How does it work?
In a constrained layer damping system, sometimes referred to as CLD, a damping material is sandwiched between two other (usually stiff/center of the "sandwich" is sheared rigid) materials. For example, Green Glue sandwiched between two layers of drywall. Damping occurs when the viscoelastic center of the "sandwich" is sheared (see left).
When bent, shear forces pull and stretch on the damping material. Under these conditions, the unique polymeric construction of Green Glue very efficiently converts this mechanical energy to heat. The vibration energy is not isolated, it's dissipated and gone.

In a series of lab tests, The Green Glue Company explored the impact that damping with Green Glue has on the STC performance of a resilient channel wall - and a short-circuited resilient channel wall. A reference wall with no damping attained STC=52, a Green Glue wall that was heavily short-circuited (16 short circuits on an 8 x 8 test wall) attained STC=55 with the same number of drywall layers and type, stud spacing, insulation, channel, channel spacing, etc. Based on this work it seems reasonable to state that Green Glue can eliminate the risk of resilient channel installation failure due to short circuit. And so the often-criticized, but still inexpensive, resilient channel has a new ally in the STC game. Green Glue does add to the cost of an installation, but this cost is fractional, and trivial compared to the cost of installation failure and the lawsuits / forced re-building that can result. Additionally, the combination of Green Glue and resilient channel saves valuable space and money relative to other options, such as sound clips or double stud walls.
Moving beyond this synergy with resilient channel, and taking a look at STC (ignoring low frequency considerations), one finds that there are some applications where Green Glue is an ideal choice, and some applications where it is not the best choice for meeting these requirements. Green Glue has been fire tested and demonstrated to be compatible with all fire-rated constructions. So, the inclusion of Green Glue does not affect the fire rating of an assembly. To gain an idea of how far typical theater applications and deviate from the assumption inherent to the STC system, we view the response measured in an actual theater compared to the assumed noise source for STC.
A typical home theater, playing a scene from an action movie very loudly. The enormous low frequency content is apparent. Sound levels peak at 40Hz, and remain strong to 20Hz (the lower limit of this measurement).
Now, this is a loud theater, with a healthy pair of subwoofers, and may be viewed as falling on the higher extreme, but the strong low frequency content is typical of modern theater situations - low frequency noise must be dealt with.
Well, as we have to deal with low frequency noise, we may as well get started.
